2007 Winter Conference Scheduled Jan. 25-26 --by Sean Tobin, FASI
President, Heritage Consultants-Professional
Administrators
The 2007 Winter Conference of the Florida
Association of Self Insurance will be held Thursday and Friday, January
25-26, 2007, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary, 1501 International
Parkway, Lake Mary (greater Orlando area), Florida.
Once again, we
are encouraging all members to attend. This important meeting provides an
excellent forum for you to voice your concerns and needs as a member and
to offer input on the future direction of our Association. If you already
serve on a FASI committee, this is your chance to have direct input on
future Association goals and objectives. If you are not serving on a FASI
committee, this is an excellent opportunity for you to acquaint yourself
with and hopefully become actively involved on a committee that deals with
a topic of interest to you. Click here
to see the preliminary agenda for the Winter Conference.
To
register for this meeting, you'll need to do two things: 1) reserve a
hotel room, and 2) send in the attendance
registration form to FASI Headquarters by Friday, January 12, 2007.
The registration fee is $95. To reserve a room, call 407-995-1100 (Monday
- Friday, 8 am - 5 pm) or 800-380-7724 (any time) and ask for
accommodations in the FASI room block. The special group rate for this
meeting is $123.00 per night, single or double. Cut-off date for
guaranteed room reservations has been extended to Friday, December 22,
2006, so we strongly urge you to make reservations immediately.
Reservations can be cancelled with no penalty up to 72 hours prior to
arrival. Please register NOW.
37th Annual Convention & Trade Show, 2006 --by Bethan Hyde, York
Insurance Services Group, Inc.
The FASI 37th
Annual Convention & Trade Show, was held Sunday, July 23, 2006, to
Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at the Ritz Carlton, Naples, Florida. FASI’s
annual golf outing was Sunday at Tiburon Golf Club (see golf article below
for details). Special thanks to Angela Patman and Cypress Care for the
great bags!
The Welcome Reception was in the Club Room. Attendees
and guests were greeted by the FASI officers and Board of Directors as
they entered the recently remodeled Club Room. Attendees enjoyed the
opportunity to catch up with colleagues and socialize, all the while
anticipating an excellent educational program focusing on the self insured
industry.
Monday began with FASI’s Annual Business Meeting. The
2005-2006 Board of Directors were recognized for their contributions this
past year. The new slate for the 2006-2007 Board of Directors was read and
approved. Sean Tobin will continue as President and retain ownership of
the Presidential Gavel. Thank you to those who have served and to those
who are about to serve.
The Convention Committee deserves a big
applause as the sessions at this Convention were timely and informative.
The Florida Association of Self Insurance was pleased and honored to have
Senator Tom Lee, Florida Senate President, Brandon, FL, open the meeting
as the Keynote Speaker. Senator Lee is running for Florida’s Chief
Financial Officer this year and came to share his vision of helping
Florida’s financial security – an important issue as Florida’s Chief
Financial Officer regulates and monitors Florida’s insurance
market.
Other speakers at the Convention included James Hillman,
MD, Associate Medical Director and Senior Consultant of the Florida Poison
Information Center, Tampa, FL, who spoke to us about “Indoor Air Quality
and Respiratory Symptoms”; Dennis Ross (R), Florida House of
Representatives, Ross, Vecchio & Trussell, P.A., Lakeland, FL, Greg
Jenkins, Division of Workers’ Compensation, Tallahassee, FL, and Gail
Shuffler, City of Tallahassee, Tallahassee, FL, who discussed the recent
legislative session; Kevin Cooper, NCH Healthcare System, Inc., Naples,
FL, Randal Thomas, Esq., Bonita Springs, FL, and Brian Wolff, MD, Collier
Neurological Specialists, LLC, Naples, FL, offered their experiences and
insights in “Spend Money to Save Money” – pay a little more for quality
healthcare which results in lower costs overall; Jeffrey Fieldson, Marsh
USA, Nashville, TN, gave an in-depth view of the cost of hurricanes and
natural disasters; Patrick Curtin, Mahoney & Associates, Fort Lauderd
ale, FL, and Don Bourasso, Wachovia Insurance, Tallahassee, FL, spoke
about “Beyond Self Insurance”; and the cast of “As the Claim Turns” (see
separate article below). Thank you to each of these speakers for their
contribution to a successful Convention!
The Convention ended with
FASI's 37th Dinner Party, featuring music by Don Juceam and his
orchestra, delicious cuisine and desserts. There were more than 20 door
prizes provided by FASI which all guests had an opportunity to win
(everyone received a drawing ticket at the door). Thank you to Woodall
& Broome Investigative Services for donating prizes along with FASI
for the bidding with casino winnings on more than 10 prizes auctioned off
at the end of the evening. Lots of bidding wars ensued, with bids as high
as $2 million. Wow!
Thank you to all of our sponsors, exhibitors
and attendees for making this convention a success. We look forward to
seeing you again next year. Mark your calendars for July 22-25,
2007.

FASI's 37th Annual Exhibitors Showcase
Reception --by Tammy Roy, Sports & Orthopaedic
Rehab Team
Tammy Roy,
Director of Client Services, Sports & Orthopedic Rehab Team shares her company’s experience with our
readers.
The Exhibitor's Showcase
Reception and prize drawings were held Monday evening in the Plaza
Ballroom. The festive atmosphere offered an excellent opportunity for
camaraderie amongst the exhibitors, attendees, and guests who filled the
room.
Although we have been a long time member and supporter of
FASI and have attended numerous conferences, this was the first year that
Sports & Orthopedic Rehab Team chose to exhibit. We did so mainly
because we are re-branding our name and wanted the additional
exposure.
It was a huge success! Miriam and I were able to debut
our new display...ok, with some help!! Thanks to Claude, Dan, and everyone
who helped us put it together! In the meantime, we provided several people
with some invaluable entertainment! Did I mention it was a NEW
display??
We were able to show our new give-a-way items, but our
fitted women's t-shirts proved to be most popular, once Bethan showed off
her retail skills and showed us the best way to display
them!
Some of the exhibitors chose a prize to give to blind
draw winners at the end of the evening! Names of registered attendees were
placed in a bucket and the exhibiting company representative drew the
names and presented the winner with that company's door prize. Miriam made
one of her famously beautiful baskets and there were plenty of other
really great giveaways!
Not only did we make some solid contacts
(even with other exhibitors!), we had fun with the exhibit. We were able
to meet people we wouldn't have otherwise and enjoyed the evening. There
were a total of 18 exhibitors and I'm sure they too would say the Florida
Association of Self Insurance Exhibitor Showcase was a great
success!
We're looking forward to 2007!
2006 Session Incentives... --by
Nita Chisari, Quality Resource Management,
Inc.
For every session
attended, each person received a drawing ticket. Sometime during each
session, a drawing was held for a $50 American Express Gift Cheque (hence
the drawing ticket). Thank you to Quality Resource Management, Inc. (QRM)
for sponsoring all of the drawings for each of the
sessions.
Nita Chisari, President & CEO, QRM, shares her
company’s experience with our readers: “QRM had a great experience at this
year’s FASI 37th Annual Convention &
Tradeshow.
"We really enjoyed the idea of drawing tickets at
each session to see who won the $50 American Express gift cards. I feel
that this not only encouraged attendance at each session, but also
provided an exciting end to each training session.
"For QRM, it
gave us the exposure that we wanted from a sponsorship. This allowed us a
unique opportunity that every vendor wants. With this exposure, QRM was
able to distinguish ourselves as one of the nation's leaders in 24/7 claim
reporting.
"It is always a pleasure to participate in FASI’s Annual
Tradeshow & Convention. We look forward to next year’s 38th
Annual Tradeshow & Convention and would be pleased to sponsor this
opportunity again.
"My calendar is marked for July
2007!"
Annual Casino Party --by Susan Theis,
Commercial Risk Management, Inc.
The FASI Convention ended with our Annual Casino Party. As usual,
the event was a huge success. The entertainment this year was Olde Blue
Eyes, Don Juceam and his orchestra performing the hits of Frank Sinatra.
After an outstanding buffet dinner, the games began! As
usual, Bethan did a great job selling tickets for our charity, American
Heart Association, and great prizes were given away. The money winners had
a great time bidding on numerous items that were donated.
The children even joined in the fun with their own bingo
games and prizes. It was a wonderful family evening.
“As the Claim
Turns” --by Susan Theis, Commercial Risk Management,
Inc.
Tuesday's session
ended with a panel skit, "As the Claim Turns." This panel took the
audience through the life of a claim -- and what a claim! There were very
complicated medical and legal issues, employment issues, guardianship
issues, immigration issues, safety concerns, fraud, medication, and
settlement issues. Although this was a large, complicated and expensive
claim, it had a very positive ending. The entire panel did an excellent
job of presenting this claim; however, the Academy Award goes to Ed Shaw,
Caspers Company, playing the part of Hollywood! The formal
message we wanted to share was that the care and consideration of the
injured worker is the most important part of the claim and the
responsibility of the employer/adjuster. The presentation was
informative and one comment from the audience, from someone not involved
in the day-to-day claims handling was, "I did not realize how much was
involved in the handling of a claim."
FASI Annual
Golf Outing 2006 --by Bethan Hyde, York Claim
Services, Inc.
FASI’s
Annual Golf Outing was held on July 23, 2006, at Tiburon Golf Club, a Greg
Norman Course and home of the Franklin Templeton Golf Shootout in Naples,
Florida. The format was a scramble with a requirement of using a minimum
of two (2) drives per player, no matter how bad, and began with an 8:30
a.m. shotgun start.
Special
thanks to Ross, Vecchio & Trussell, P.A., and York Special
Investigations, Inc., for sponsoring the much needed beverages. Awards and
prizes were given out at the luncheon, co-sponsored by Heritage
Consultants, Inc. and Gallagher Bassett Services, Inc. in the Sydney room
at the end of play. Golf tee sponsorship signs were displayed at tee
boxes, recognition and acknowledgment flyers placed on each golf cart; and
a sponsorship sign was displayed daily throughout the conference. Each
registered sponsor was given a ribbon recognizing their continued support
and dedication to the Florida Association of Self
Insurance.
Prizes were awarded for
1st Place; 2nd Place; 3rd Place; Last
Place; Women’s and Men’s Longest Drive; Women’s and Men’s Closest to the
Pin; and the Putting Contest. Prizes were awarded for the 1st
& 2nd Best Golf Poker Hand and Worst Golf Poker
Hand.
Throughout the 18 holes of
play, golfers hoped their drive was in the fairway, their short game was
good and they were on the green. Some shot par, others bogeyed, even
birdied or made an eagle, while some just came to have fun and help. Thank
you to all of the volunteers who were there early and throughout the day
to assist with registration, cart goodies and the golf poker hand:
Commercial Risk Management; York Special
Investigations.
Thank you to
everyone who participated for his or her commitment and loyalty to FASI.
Without your dedication and continued support this event would not be
possible.
